One of the men had an outstanding warrant and opened fire as the officers approached, striking Officer Schiavana in the chest and Officer Beauregard in the head. Officer Schiavana succumbed to his injuries at the scene and Officer Beauregard succumbed to his injuries three days later. The suspect later committed suicide as officers searched a home he was hiding in.;Officer Beauregard had served with the agency for five years. He was survived by his wife, two children, and parents.

Upon his arrival he disarmed the suspect. However, the suspect pulled out a second handgun and shot and killed Patrolman Jordan. The suspect was convicted of murder and executed in the electric chair the following year.;Patrolman Jordan had served with the agency for 12 years.

MillerOxford Police years oldSaturday, June 19, 1909https://mlemf.trustypress.dev/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Oxford.pngObituary Town Constable Albert Miller was shot and killed by one of two teenage brothers he caught burglarizing the Oxford Heights Place. Constable Miller managed to return fire, killing one of the suspects. His brother was apprehended the next day and charged with second degree murder.;On September 4, 1909, the suspect was acquitted after his attorney convinced the jury that his brother shot Constable Miller.

He served as a Military Policeman in the U.S. Army during WWII before returning to duty for Cambridge. He was survived by his wife, parents, and several brothers.

All three men were arrested and charged with theft.;Sergeant Picone had served with the Lynn Police Department for nine years. He was survived by his wife and three children.

During the questioning one of the men produced a revolver and shot Patrolman Peterson in the stomach. Both suspects fled and were never apprehended.;Patrolman Peterson had been with the agency for six years and was survived by his wife, mother, brother and sister.

He and another officer were attempting to break up the fight, which involved approximately 20 people, when one of the fighters took his nightclub and struck him with it several times.;He collapsed approximately five minutes after the fighting was stopped.;Patrolman Saccocia had served with the agency for 15 years. He was survived by his wife and three children.

He was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.;Officer Hayes had served with the Massachusetts State Police for 12 years and was assigned to Troop B.

Both truck drivers were charged in relation to the incident.;Patrolman Hewitt was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII and had served with the Massachusetts State Police for two years.

BaranowskiDepartment of Correction54 years oldSunday, July 30, 1972https://mlemf.trustypress.dev/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Corrections.pngObituary Instructor Alfred Baranowski and Correctional Officer James Souza were shot and killed during an escape attempt from the Norfolk Prison. The inmate's wife had smuggled the gun into the prison for him. The inmate then shot and killed his wife and attempted to escape. Officers Souza and Baranowski were killed as the inmate attempted to escape. When the inmate was unable to escape, he shot and killed himself. A prison was named in honor of Instructor Baranowski and Officer Souza.;Instructor Baranowski had served with the agency for 20 years. He was survived by his wife and five children.

The male victim claimed that his wife had chased him out of the home with a pistol. Patrolman Sturdivant was shot three times by the suspect as he and other officers attempted a forced entry to take the barricaded suspect into the custody.;During the ensuing standoff the woman fired more then 40 rounds at officers. She was finally taken into custody after running out of ammunition. The suspect was committed to the Worcester Insane Asylum.;Patrolman Sturdivant had been with the agency for 15 years and was survived by his wife.

HollisQuincy Police32 years oldMonday, October 3, 1927https://mlemf.trustypress.dev/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Quincy.pngObituary Patrolman Alfred Hollis was shot and killed when he and his partner responded to a burglary call at a local hardware store. Patrolman Hollis went to the back of the store and the other officer went to the front. The second officer heard a shot and ran to the back of the store where he found Patrolman Hollis fatally wounded. A suspect was arrested after a shootout with police in Connecticut. The man plead guilty and was sentenced to life in prison and has since died.;Patrolman Hollis had served with the agency for one year.

SavelaState Police35 years oldThursday, August 30, 1951https://mlemf.trustypress.dev/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/State.pngObituary Patrolman Alje Savela was shot and killed while making a traffic stop on Route 122 in the Town of Barre at 2020 hours. A farmer heard several gun shots and found Patrolman Savela's body with seven 9 mm gunshot wounds.;One of the suspects in the case later shot and killed Assistant Superintendent James Godwin, of the Florida Department of Corrections, during an escape attempt on April 4, 1955. The suspect died in prison.;Patrolman Savela had served with the Massachusetts State Police for four years and was assigned to A Troop. The range at the Massachusetts State Police Academy is named in his honor. He is buried at North Cemetery in Lunenberg, Massachusetts.

He was shot once in the head and once in the chest when he confronted the suspect. The man was shot and wounded by other officers before being taken into custody.;Patrolman Cuneo had served with the agency for 15 years. He was survived by his wife and nine children.;On October 8, 2011 the City of Boston erected a memorial sign on Hanover Street in Boston's North End to mark the place where Patrolman Cuneo was shot and killed.

SergeantArthur CashinChelsea Police37 years oldSaturday, July 19, 1980https://mlemf.trustypress.dev/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Chelsea.pngObituary Sergeant Arthur Cashin was shot and killed while making a traffic stop.;After stopping a vehicle for going the wrong way on a one-way street in Bellingham Square, Chelsea, Sergeant Cashin approached the driver's side of the vehicle as his partner, Officer William Copello, approached the passenger side. The driver got out of the vehicle and immediately punched Sergeant Cashin, who landed face first on the sidewalk. The driver then un-holstered Sergeant Cashin's service weapon and shot the officer twice in the back as he lay on the ground. Officer Copello then drew his service weapon, shooting and killing the driver.;Sergeant Cashin was pronounced dead shortly after midnight on July 20th at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.;Sergeant Cashin had been with the agency for nine years. He was survived by his wife and two young daughters. His nephew, Captain Rick Cashin, was killed in an on-duty automobile accident while serving with the Massachusetts State Police on January 28, 2009.

Patrolman Bower and another officer were sent to the western part of town where it was reported that five men were breaking into a building. The officers found that the suspects had left the building and started toward Lawrence to try to locate them. A few miles away they stopped a car without lights. While Patrolman Bower was talking to the driver he was shot. Both officers emptied their revolvers at the suspects as they fled in their automobile.

Belmonte was shot and killed and another officer was seriously wounded in a gun battle with three armed robbery suspects.;Police received a tip that the Red Coach Grill on Route 1 was going to be robbed. A gun battle resulted when the robbers ran out the back door and found five officers waiting. One suspect was shot and killed and the other two were taken into custody.;One suspect was found guilty of first degree murder and sentenced to life on October 10, 1969. The other suspect was acquitted.;Officer Belmonte had served with the Saugus Police Department for eight years. He is survived by his wife and two sons.

He confronted a young man, who, unknown to Anderson, was wanted on outstanding warrants out of Framingham, Massachusetts. The male had been speeding down a one-way street, going the wrong way.;When Officer Anderson identified himself as a police officer, the male pulled out a handgun and shot Officer Anderson point-blank in the chest.;A Boston Police officer returning to Boston from a funeral for Chief of Police Robert J. Mortell, apprehended the killer a short time later.;Officer Anderson had served with the agency for 14 years. He is survived by his wife and five children.

Unbeknownst to the officers, the car had been stolen and was being followed by another car driven by a female acquaintance. As his partner talked to driver of the second car the other driver came up to Patrolman Cadorette holding a 9 mm handgun and disarmed him. He then held Patrolman Cadorette as a human shield and told the officer to shine his flashlight on his partner.;Patrolman Cadorette instead turned in an attempt to disarm the gunman and was shot in the chest. His partner was able to return fire, killing the suspect, but was also struck in the chest twice and seriously wounded. The wounded officer was able to make it back to his patrol car and call for backup. The two officers were the only Ashland officers on duty that night and had to wait for officers from neighboring agencies to find the location.;Patrolman Cadorette had been with the agency for four years and was survived by his wife and four children.

DeiningerBoston Police38 years oldWednesday, February 12, 1919https://mlemf.trustypress.dev/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Boston.pngObituary Patrolman Deininger was shot and killed by two auto theft suspects during a stake out. Five suspects were apprehended and two were charged with his murder.;One of the suspects was convicted of second degree murder and sentenced to 15 to 20 years in prison. On May 25, 1920, he escaped from prison with two other men. He surrendered to authorities in Middlesex County three months later.;One of the other escapees was serving a life sentence for the murder of Patrolman Joseph C. Reiser of the Boston, Massachusetts Police Department on January 20, 1918. He was captured in Chicago on December 24, 1920.;Patrolman Deininger was survived by his wife and two children.

Patrolman Collins and other officers went to a house, in Byfield, where the man fled to and as they entered the home Patrolman Collins was shot and killed. The suspect was shot and killed by another Trooper.;Patrolman Collins had been with the agency for eight years.
WardenCharles Lincoln JrDepartment of Correction47 years oldSaturday, June 17, 1843https://mlemf.trustypress.dev/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Corrections.pngObituary Warden Lincoln was stabbed and killed by a prisoner at the Charlestown State Prison.;Warden Lincoln was walking through the shoe department of the prison when a prisoner approached him from behind and stabbed him in the neck, killing him.;The suspect was immediately seized by a guard. He was charged with murder. The suspect was acquitted on the grounds of insanity and was removed from the State Prison and placed in the Lunatic Asylum at Worcester. On May 21, 1884 the suspect committed suicide by jumping out a window at the Lunatic Asylum.;Warden Lincoln had served as the Warden of the State Prison for many years and was survived by his wife eleven children.

The driver was arrested and convicted of charges in connection with Patrolman Sciolto's death.;A bridge in the interchange was named in honor of Patrolman Sciolto.;Patrolman Sciolto had served with the Attleboro Police Department for 14 years. He was survived by his wife and two children.

He was survived by his wife, four daughters, and one son.;Patrolman Mathews' grandson, Patrolman Wallace Mathews, was killed in the line of duty on April 23rd, 1953, while serving with the Massachusetts State Police.

Officer Argentinis was chasing a drug suspect across a roadway when a Massachusetts State Police cruiser, that was responding to assist him, struck him. He was transported to a Boston hospital where he died two days later of head injuries.;The suspect was arrested after the accident and was charged with cocaine possession and resisting arrest.;Officer Argentinis had served with the agency for 12 years. He is survived by his wife and two young sons.

He was transported to a local hospital where he remained in a coma for two months before succumbing to his injuries.;Patrolman Bolton had served with the Taunton Police Department for 33 years. He ran to the center of the bridge, where he observed a man struggling in the icy river 20 feet below.;After taking off his belt, Patrolman Regan climbed down a bridge pile to the water. He was able to pull the man to the bridge using his belt, at which point he discovered the man was too drunk to assist himself in anyway. Despite getting soaked with the ice-cold water, Patrolman Regan was able to secure a boat which brought them both to shore.;Patrolman Regan began feeling ill the following day. His condition worsened and it was determined that he contracted spinal meningitis as a result of his exposure to the cold. He passed away on January 13, 1898.;Patrolman Regan had served with the Boston Police Department for four years in Division 13, Headquarters, Division 5, and was assigned to Division 1 when he passed. He was survived by his wife and five children.

He was convicted of two counts of murder and sentenced to life. In December of 1985 he escaped from prison. He remained at large until March 22, 2005, when he was arrested in Chicago, Illinois. He was denied parole on January 12, 2010.;Jail Master Robinson had served with the Middlesex County Sheriff's Department for 27 years.

The drunk driver in the second vehicle was charged with negligent motor vehicle homicide.;Sergeant Weddleton had served with the Massachusetts State Police for 28 years. The suspect was arrested at his home a short time later.The suspect was convicted of Patrolman Gobin's murder and sentenced to death on April 1, 1932. His sentence was commuted to life in prison on April 27, 1933.

Watchman Gerrior was making his rounds when he encountered one of the inmates trying to scale a cell wall. The inmate attacked him and strangled him to death. The inmate then took Watchman Gerrior's keys and freed five other inmates.;As the group fled they were confronted by Supervisor Amlaw. Several of the inmates attacked him and beat him to death with an iron leg from a cell cot. The inmates also attacked and injured three more guards. All of the inmates were eventually apprehended.;Supervisor Amlaw had been a member of the Massachusetts Department of Correction for 20 years.

Before fleeing they stabbed Officer Weston ten times with a chisel. As they attempted to make their escape they were confronted by Officer Murphy and Officer Landry. Officer Murphy caught them as they headed towards the third floor of the building. The men suddenly turned around and stabbed Officer Murphy with the chisels as well. They also stabbed Officer Landry when he came to the aid of Officer Murphy.;The suspects were eventually apprehended after a standoff with the state police. Both inmates were executed on January 1, 1947, for the three murders.;Officer Weston had been with the agency for 15 years. He was survived by his wife, four children, and five grandchildren.

Thomas received word that a person suspected of shooting Springfield, Massachusetts, Police Lieutenant James Daly had boarded a train bound for Palmer. When the officers arrived at the train station they located the suspect on the train. When they approached the suspect he attempted to flee, shooting Officer Thomas once in the leg and Sheriff Bills three times in the abdomen as he ran. Officer Thomas fired two shots at the suspect, striking him. The suspect was taken into custody, despite their injuries, with the help of passengers. Sheriff Bills was transported to the hospital where he succumbed to his injuries later that day.;Officer Thomas was treated but survived and went on to become Deputy Chief of the agency. The Springfield officer, Lieutenant Daly, also survived his injuries.;The suspect was convicted of second degree murder and sentenced to life on May 10, 1920. He was pardoned by Governor James Curley on December 25, 1936. It was later discovered the suspect's father paid a member of the governor's council 1500 dollars to recommend the pardon. He along with a state representative, who tried to cover up the bribe, were impeached and found guilty of perjury.;Sheriff Bills had served with the agency for 22 years and was survived by his wife, sister, and two nephews.

Several passengers in the vehicle attempted to make the man stop but were unsuccessful.;The suspect was apprehended but acquitted of murder and instead convicted of vehicular manslaughter. The judge sentenced the suspect to the maximum 18 to 20 years but the suspect was released on parole after only ten years.;Officer Vitale had served with the Saugus Police Department for 14 years. He was survived by his wife, three children, five brothers, and two sisters.

The suspects tried to flee but one was killed when they crashed into a utility pole. The second suspect was arrested and charged in New York with grand larceny and as a fugitive and in Boston with murder.;Patrolman McInnes had served with the Boston Police Department for 7-1/2 years. He was survived by his wife and daughter.

The three officers were working in the Department of Defective Delinquents section of the farm at the time. Officer Weston had gone with two inmates to carpentry and shoe shop to fix a light. He turned his back to the inmates to screw the light bulb in and was attacked by one of the men and knocked unconscious.;The inmates then grabbed several tools and chisels. Before fleeing they stabbed Officer Weston ten times with a chisel. As they attempted to make their escape they were confronted by Officer Murphy and Officer Landry. Officer Murphy caught them as they headed towards the third floor of the building. The men suddenly turned around and stabbed Officer Murphy with the chisels as well. They also stabbed Officer Landry when he came to the aid of Officer Murphy.;The suspects were eventually apprehended after a standoff with the state police. Both inmates were executed on January 1, 1947, for the three murders.;Officer Murphy had been with the agency for five months.

Shots were exchanged between the group and the deputy marshals. Deputy Marshal Batchelder was fatally wounded. The other marshals were able to hold the group off.;A total of 18 people were arrested as a result of the incident. Two of them were charged in connection with Deputy Marshal Batchelder's death.;Deputy Marshal Batchelder was survived by his wife.

As they left the bank, while walking on Oxford Street, three men started following them. At the intersection of Oxford and Willow, the men attacked. The businessman was shot first, then they shot Patrolman Carroll. As both men lay injured on the ground, the robbers emptied their weapons into them.;The event had been witnessed by numerous people inside an adjacent shoe factory and they started pelting the fleeing robbers with shoes, cutters knives, and scraps of iron. As they fled, they later shot another civilian in the leg, believing him to be a plain clothes policeman. When the robbers were being surrounded, one escaped, one committed suicide, and one was shot in the hand during another gun battle. The robber that escaped was later shot and killed by other officers after he opened fire on them. The captured robber was convicted of murder and robbery and was executed on March 7th, 1911.;Patrolman Carroll was survived by his wife.

He was survived by his wife, daughter, and son, who later became a member of the Shrewsbury Police Department.

The bomb builder was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment, but that conviction was overturned and he was re-sentenced in 2007 to serve 37 years. In August of 2008 a federal appeals court reinstated the life sentence.;Officer Hurley had served with the agency for 23 years. He was survived by his wife, two daughters, two stepsons, and two grandchildren.

Patrolman DiNapoli was struck in the shoulder, arm, and abdomen. He was transported to a local hospital where he died a short time later.;The suspect fled the scene after the shooting but was arrested in Pennsylvania several days later. In 2001 the suspect was found guilty and sentenced to life with no chance for parole.;Patrolman DiNapoli had served with the agency for 21 years. He is survived by two grown children. His son followed in his footsteps and became a Holyoke police officer.

He began following the vehicle and was waiting for backup before attempting to stop the vehicle. The driver of the car suddenly pulled into a parking lot and stopped the car, forcing Patrolman Johnson to initiate a felony traffic stop before his backup arrived. When he ordered both occupants out of the vehicle the passenger fled on foot. Patrolman Johnson stayed with the driver, who then also attempted to flee.;Patrolman Johnson was able to catch one of the suspects but during the ensuing struggle the man was able to gain control of his service weapon and shot him. The suspect then shot him twice more as he lay on the ground.;The suspects were apprehended three hours later following a massive manhunt, however, Patrolman Johnson's service weapon was never located.;Patrolman Johnson's killer was found guilty of second degree murder and sentenced to life. He was denied parole for the fourth time in April of 2009. He will be eligible for parole again in April of 2014.;Patrolman Johnson had served with the Holliston Police Department for 6 years. He was survived by his wife and two children.

Unexpectedly, the subject ran into a nearby yard and turned and fired, killing Patrolman Staples with shots to the throat and chest.;Officer Lonergan, joined by a Patrolman Brooks, continued to pursue the suspect who ran toward a neighboring house and, upon approaching the house, turned and shot Officer Lonergan in the abdomen. The officer, while mortally injured, continued to fire in the direction of the fleeing suspect.;The suspect forced his way into a house at gunpoint forcing the occupant out of the house. The suspect then began shooting at responding patrolman through the windows of the home. When the shooting stopped, police officers carefully entered the home and located the suspect hiding in a closet. When he refused to give himself up, they fired into the closet causing him to surrender. He was arrested and charged with murder.;Officer Lonergan was rushed to Whidden Hospital where he died five days later.;Officer Lonergan was survived by his wife and five children.

He was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.;Sergeant O'Connor had served with the Nahant Police Department for 28 years.

He crawled and walked to a local pay phone where he called for an ambulance. His optic nerve was damaged and he went blind right away. Officer Winn lived for another seventeen months, dying as a result of the severe injuries that he sustained in that horrendous beating.

During the encounter the two subjects began struggling with the officers. As Patrolman Maceira struggled with one of the men the other man was able to grab his service revolver out of its holster and shot him in the jaw and neck.;The wound caused severe injuries to this throat and vocal cords and left him disabled. During his ensuing recovery he was only able to whisper and had extreme difficulty swallowing. As a result of his inability to swallow, he choked to death on a piece of food during his recovery.;Both men were arrested and convicted of the original shooting.;Patrolman Maceira was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Vietnam War. He had graduated from the Boston Police Department's academy only three weeks prior to being shot. He is survived by his son and sister, who worked as a civilian with the Boston Police Department.

The inmates were then brought to the Health Services Unit for an examination and any necessary treatment.;Officer Ribeiro was part of a two man team that had escorted one of the inmates to the HSU when he suddenly collapsed on the floor. CPR was initiated by medical staff and an ambulance called. After transport, Officer Ribeiro was pronounced dead at Deaconess Nashoba Hospital at 10:30 pm.;Officer Ribeiro had served with the Massachusetts Department of Correction for seven years.

Watchman Burnham went to the back of the building, while his partner remained in the front.;While in the back, Watchman Burnham confronted two burglars, who had attempted to blow the door off of the bank vault. The burglars shot and killed Watchman Burnham and then escaped.;The suspects were captured later in the night and were charged with murder.;Watchman Burnham had served with the Haverhill Police Department for six years. He was survived by his wife and four children.

The suspect opened fire with a revolver, striking Patrolman Reiser four times, before fleeing.;The suspect was arrested a week later. He was found to be responsible for 80 burglaries. He specialized in stealing jewelry and phonograph records. He was convicted of Patrolman Reisner's murder and sentenced to life in prison.;On May 25, 1920, the suspect broke out of the Massachusetts State Prison along with two other men. He was captured in Chicago on December 24, 1920. One of the other escapees was serving a 15 to 20 year sentence for the murder of Patrolman Charles E. Deininger of the Boston, Massachusetts Police Department on February 13, 1919. He surrendered to authorities in Middlesex County in August of 1920.;Patrolman Reiser had been employed with the Boston Police Department for ten years.

When they opened the apartment door the male subject suddenly turned violent, pushed the woman into the apartment, and slammed the door.;As Officer Ambrose attempted to push the door open to get into the apartment, the man fired a handgun through it, striking him. The subject then opened the door, shot him again, and then shot the woman, wounding her. He then fled to his car where he committed suicide.;Other officers responding to the initial call located Officer Ambrose and the wounded woman and immediately began CPR. Both were transported to a local hospital where Officer Ambrose succumbed to his wounds.;Officer Ambrose had served with the Springfield Police Department for 36 years and had previously served as a police cadet for two years. He is survived by his wife, two children, and one granddaughter.

He remained in the coma until passing away on November 29, 2002. The suspect recovered but was found incompetent to stand trial and committed to a state hospital. In 2009 the killer was found not guilty by reason of insanity.;Patrolman Jupin had been employed with the Westminster Police Department for eight years, and is survived by his parents.

After questioning the occupants their suspicion was aroused, and while Patrolman Bell stood by the car, his partner took the cruising car to the nearest patrol call box to check with headquarters on the registration.;At this same time Patrolman Murphy called in to the station and was sent to the scene on his motorcycle. Meanwhile, the female operator of the vehicle diverted Patrolman Bell's attention and disarmed him. She then handed the gun to the male passenger, a known criminal and jail breaker, who put the gun in Patrolman Bell's back and ordered him to drive the car. As they drove away Patrolman Murphy overtook the car and forced it to stop. As Patrolman Murphy dismounted from his motorcycle the suspect opened fire on Patrolman Murphy, striking him. The suspect then turned his gun on Patrolman Bell and fired two rounds into his right side, and fled. Although seriously wounded, Patrolman Murphy rose to his knees and fired at the fleeing suspect, hitting him at least once.;Patrolman Bell died at the scene. Patrolman Murphy was removed to the hospital where he died the next month from his wounds.;The female suspect was captured at the scene. The male suspect was captured a week later in an apartment in Dorchester in a raid led by the Newton Police Chief. He was later found guilty of murder and executed.;Patrolman Murphy had served with the agency for two years. He was survived by his wife and four children.

With a smuggled handgun he shot and killed Jail Master David S. Robinson. Three days later he shot and killed himself when police stormed a Boston apartment where he was hiding. His accomplice and the other escapee were captured a short time later. On September 24, 1961, his accomplice was convicted of Patrolman Gorman's murder and sentenced to death. His sentence was later commuted to life.;Patrolman Gorman had served with the agency for eight years and was survived by his wife and three children.

Chief Butler stepped into the middle of the street and signaled to the driver to stop. The driver, who was intoxicated, struck Chief Butler, the force of which threw him some distance. The car then ran over his body. Chief Butler was transported home by two of his children where he died of a fractured skull and broken back.;The motorist was arrested and charged with manslaughter. The manslaughter charge was dropped but the motorist was found guilty of operating a vehicle under the influence and sentenced to one year in a house of correction.;Chief Butler had served with the agency for 35 years. He was survived by his wife, eleven children, three brothers, two of whom became chief of the agency and the third an officer. Two of his nephews also went on to serve with the agency, one of whom also became a chief.

He succumbed to his injuries shortly thereafter at a hospital.;Captain Creeden had served in law enforcement for 18 years. He was survived by his wife and six children.

As he pulled the man to nearest call box the rest of the group attacked two other citizens before attacking Patrolman Kelliher. He was able to turn his call box key to the emergency position before being knocked to the ground and severely kicked and beaten. The group of men fled as backup units arrived on a patrol wagon. Patrolman Kelliher complained of severe stomach pains and succumbed to internal bleeding four months later.;Patrolman Kelliher had served with the agency for four years. He was survived by his wife.

Officer Manning stepped into the street, with his flashlight, to flag down the vehicle. At that time the unknown suspect's vehicle drove straight into Officer Manning dragging him under the vehicle and crushing him to death.;An investigation revealed that the driver of the vehicle was intoxicated. The driver was found guilty of DUI and vehicular homicide. He received six months in the county jail.;Officer Manning had served with the agency for 27 years and is survived by his wife, two children, two grandsons, three sisters, and two nieces.

During the struggle the subject struck Patrolman Tierney, knocking him unconscious. After coming to, Officer Tierney and his partner were able to take the man into custody.;Officer Tierney suffered a fractured skull and an embolism on the brain when he was struck. He was admitted and released from the hospital. A few days later he was admitted to Massachusetts General Hospital after becoming ill. He passed away while undergoing emergency brain surgery to repair the blood clot to his brain.;Officer Tierney had served with the Nahant Police Department for 25 years. He was survived by his wife and three children. One son was appointed to fill his father's position on the Nahunt police force, and one of his grandchildren later went on to serve with the Nahant Police Department.

Chief Mortell was confronting one of the subjects at gunpoint when the man opened fire, killing him. One of the suspects was arrested and sentenced to life.;A Boston police officer, while on his way home from the funeral of Chief Mortell, apprehended a suspect who had just shot and killed Police Officer Berisford Anderson of the Boston Police Department.;Chief Mortell was an instructor at the in-service academy at Mt. Wachusett Community College, served as the town of Paxton D.A.R.E. Officer, and was a high honors graduate of the Quinsigamond Community College Criminal Justice Program. He had served with the agency for 12 years. He is survived by his wife, son, and two daughters.

On June 4th, 2007, he plead guilty to manslaughter under the influence of alcohol and on June 26th, 2007, he was sentenced to serve five to seven years.;Lieutenant Cabral, who was posthumously promoted to the rank of Lieutenant, had served with the Swansea Police Department for 26 years. He is survived by his two children, brother, and two sisters.

Officer Dana was assisting the Milton officer during a traffic stop while the driver was being questioned about a television in the backseat. During the questioning the suspect became agitated and was able to gain control of the Milton officer's weapon and shot Officer Dana. The suspect was traced to a home in Boston and committed suicide as a SWAT team entered to arrest him.;Officer Dana was survived by his wife who was a member of the Milton Police Department and was on duty the night he was shot and killed. Before joining the Metropolitan Police Department he had been a federal police officer and a U.S. Air Force Security Policeman. He was survived by his wife of six months and parents.;After Officer Dana's death the Robert Dana Award was created and is awarded annually to Massachusetts Police Officers for distinguished service.

The pursuit ended in Watertown, where one suspect was killed and a Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority Police Officer was shot and seriously wounded in a gun battle. The second suspect was captured in Watertown the following evening after another shootout.;Officer Collier had served with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Police Department since January 2012 and had previously worked as a civilian employee of the Somerville Police Department. On August 22nd, 2013, he was posthumously sworn in as a Somerville police officer. He is survived by his parents and five siblings.

The suspect had made the knife in the prison shop. As Warden Tenney was making his rounds of the prison at approximately 1530 hours the suspect ran up behind him and stabbed him in the neck. Warden Tenney was able to draw his revolver as he fell to the floor, but fired not shots. The guard on duty in the shop and two other prisoners restrained the suspect and placed him in irons.;Warden Tenney was taken to the prison hospital where he died from his wound.;The suspect later told an investigating Coroner that he got the idea to stab Warden Tenney in the neck after another prisoner had stabbed Deputy Warden Galen Walker in the neck two weeks earlier.;The suspect was convicted of Warden Tenney's murder and sentenced to death. While awaiting his execution he died in prison on January 12, 1858.;Warden Tenney had served in several correctional institutions over a 12-year period and was survived by his wife of three weeks.

He was hospitalized several times with viral infections as a result of the injuries.;The person who set off the tear gas was never identified and remains at large.;His lungs suffered further damage in May 1999 when he responded to a fire in another residence hall and was exposed to the smoke while evacuating residents. He was hospitalized again after that incident and was forced to medically retire in 2004.;Officer Devlin had served with the Boston College Police Department for 21 years. He is survived by his wife, daughter, parents, brother, and two sisters.

He was off duty and driving with his family in Billerica when he observed a vehicle behind him being driven in an erratic fashion.;Suspecting the driver was drunk, Patrolman Strunk exited his vehicle when traffic stopped and identified himself as a police officer. He asked the driver to turn the vehicle off, and when he refused, Patrolman Strunk reached inside to turn it off. As he did so the operator sped off, dragging Patrolman Strunk approximately one quarter mile before slamming into a utility pole. The suspect fled the scene but was arrested a short time later. He was sentenced to 14 years but served only seven years.;Patrolman Strunk had served with the agency for two years and was posthumously awarded the George L. Hanna Award for Bravery. He was survived by his wife and three sons, one of whom also served as a police officer in the Billerica Police Department.

Patrolman Giunta later died at the hospital.;The suspect was found competent to stand trial and was ultimately found guilty of first degree murder by extreme atrocity and sentenced to life without parole on May 29, 1998.;Patrolman Giunta had been with the agency for 21 years and is survived by his wife, daughter, and two sons.

As he exited his cruiser and walked towards the bank, a gang member who was across the street opened fire on him with a rifle, striking him in the back several times. Patrolman Schroeder was taken to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.;Patrolman Schroeder's killer was the focus of the largest manhunt in New England's history. After stealing two cars and eluding police during two high speed chases involving gunfire, he was captured. He was convicted of first degree murder and sentenced to life in prison. He died in prison September 10, 2011. Three of the other gang members were all sentenced to prison but most are now freed.;The fifth gang member, a woman, evaded capture, changed her name, and lived in Oregon for 23 years. Suffering from depression, she surrendered to police in 1993. She was convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to 8 to 12 years in prison. Sergeant Conley was working a detail at the Milford Savings Bank and was shot and killed while escorting a bank employee who was returning from another bank across the street. The assailants believed the bank employee was in possession of a large amount of cash and tried to rob the employee during the trip. When they failed, gunfire erupted, resulting in the death of Sergeant Conley. The two assailants fled, however, after an intense investigation and manhunt, were arrested in New York State.;The suspects were indicted by a Worcester County Grand Jury for Murder, Carrying a Rifle Without Authority, and Armed Assault with Intent to Rob. One suspect plead guilty and was sentenced to Life in Prison without parole on the murder indictment and concurrent terms of 19 to 20 years on the Armed Assault with Intent to Rob charge, and 4 to 5 years on the firearm charge. The second suspect was found guilty after a jury trial in Worcester Superior Court of all the indictments and sentenced to Life in Prison without Parole on the murder indictment and concurrent terms of 18 to 20 years on the Assault with Intent to Rob charge, and 3 to 5 years on the firearm charge.;Sergeant Conley had served with the agency for 30 years.

That driver was also arrested and charged with driving under the influence.;Patrolman Langley was a Vietnam War veteran and was the recipient of the Purple Heart. Watchman Gerrior was making his rounds when he encountered one of the inmates trying to scale a cell wall. The inmate attacked him and strangled him to death. The inmate then took Watchman Gerrior's keys and freed five other inmates.;As the group fled they were confronted by Supervisor Amlaw. Several of the inmates attacked him and beat him to death with an iron leg from a cell cot. The inmates also attacked and injured three more guards. All of the inmates were eventually apprehended.;Watchman Gerrior was survived by his wife, daughter, and three sons.

He and a patrolman assigned to the garage began arguing as they filled his cruiser with gasoline. The argument turned into a scuffle, and the patrolman was shot with a service revolver. He died at Wesson Memorial Hospital. The other officer was charged with murder.;Officer Berte had served with the Springfield Police Department for 3 years. He was survived by his wife and three children.

Operative Craig was on a detail to protect President Theodore Roosevelt when the carriage was struck. President Roosevelt and the Governor of Massachusetts were slightly injured in the accident.;The trolly car driver was convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to six months in jail.;Operative Craig had served with the agency for less then 1 year. He was the first secret service agent to be killed while on a presidential protection detail. He had previously served for 12 years in the British Army and was survived by his wife. He is buried in Oak Woods Cemetery, Chicago, and there is a memorial to him in Pittsfield, Massachusetts which was dedicated in the summer of 2005.

As they neared the cabin the homeowner's dog alerted to their position. The homeowner's son and an adult friend then followed the dog into the woods as the deputy marshals retreated and took up a defensive position.;As the two groups encountered each other the deputy marshals identified themselves but were immediately fired upon. Deputy Marshal Degan was struck by a shot from a.30-06 rifle, killing him instantly. The homeowner's son and dog were killed by return fire while the subject who shot Deputy Marshal Degan fled and returned to the cabin.;Following a standoff in which the homeowner was wounded and his wife was fatally shot by an FBI sniper, the man's other family members and the subject who shot Deputy Marshal Degan were taken into custody. The man who shot Deputy Marshal Degan was later acquitted of federal murder charges in connection with Deputy Marshal Degan's death.;Deputy Marshal Degan was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran. He was survived by his wife and two sons.

Two men came home and surprised two burglars inside. While one wrestled with the burglars the other man ran into the street shouting for police. Sergeant Healey responded and as he entered the front door one of the suspects shot him twice.;One of the suspects accidentally shot himself in the foot as they made their escape. With information provided by two taxi drivers, the suspects were taken into custody at their homes. Both men were convicted of Sergeant Healey's murder and sentenced to 25 years.;Sergeant Healey had served with the Boston Police Department for 18 years. He was survived by his wife and two children.

The suspect, who was a passenger in that vehicle, was a former New Hampshire state trooper who was fired for extorting the owners of Chinese restaurants.;Patrolman Sheehan and his partner were on patrol when they encountered the vehicle stopped in traffic. They stopped their patrol car in front of the vehicle and began walking back towards it, not knowing a murder had just occurred.;The suspect met the officers between the vehicle and the patrol car and immediately opened fire with a.357 caliber revolver, striking Patrolman Sheehan in the eye. He then attempted to shoot Patrolman Sheehan's partner, but missed. He fired a second shot, striking the partner in the abdomen. The suspect ran out of ammunition as he attempted to shoot the officer again.;The officer was able to grab Patrolman Sheehan's service weapon and shot the suspect in the legs several times as he fled.;The suspect was found guilty of two counts of murder and one count of attempted murder, and was sentenced to life in prison. The suspect escaped from a work release program in 1987, but was caught in Chicago and returned to prison.;Patrolman Sheehan had served with the Westwood Police Department for 30 years.

Unexpectedly, the suspect ran into a nearby yard and turned and fired, killing Patrolman Staples with shots to the throat and chest.;Officer Lonergan, joined by a Patrolman Brooks, continued to pursue the suspect who ran toward a neighboring house and, upon approaching the house, turned and shot Officer Lonergan in the abdomen. The officer, while mortally injured, continued to fire in the direction of the fleeing suspect.;The suspect forced his way into a house at gunpoint forcing the occupant out of the house. The suspect then began shooting at responding patrolman through the windows of the home. When the shooting stopped, police officers carefully entered the home and located the suspect hiding in a closet. When he refused to give himself up, they fired into the closet causing him to surrender. He was arrested and charged with murder.;Officer Lonergan was rushed to Whidden Hospital where he died five days later.

The two returned to the location and encountered two men standing between the store and an adjacent building. One of the men opened fire on Patrolman Heath and the watchman.;Patrolman Heath, who was armed only with his club, immediately rushed towards the men but was struck in the chest by a second shot. The two men ran from the scene and it is unknown if they were ever arrested.;Patrolman Heath had previously served as the Salisbury police chief. He was survived by his wife and one daughter.
